The most common format would be Kindle. Kindle is associated with Amazon. The great thing when publishing with Amazon is they will convert your document into a Kindle format!
Other formats that would be beneficial to have your book converted to:
Epub: Apple iPad/iBooks, Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo, and most e-reading apps including: Stanza, Aldiko, Adobe Digital Editions, others
PDF: good for reading on PC
RTF: readable on most word processors
LRF: Use only for older model Sony Readers that don't support .epub
Palm Doc (PDB): for Palm reading devices
If you choose to publish with Smashwords, they will also convert your book to all of the above formats mentioned.
