Every book has to have an ISBN assigned to it.
The good thing with self-publishing is the sites you use to publish on usually offer you a free ISBN. I know through Smashwords, they offer it to you for free.

- E-books and paperback have different ISBN, even for the same book
- You can purchase an ISBN if you do not wish to obtain one from the site you publish with
